HI!

What a short but busy week of learning we had!  We earned 5 compliments but we still need to vote on our reward. I will keep you posted on what we vote on.  It shouldn't involve anything from home since it is a "little" reward for 5.  Some of the choices they wanted to vote on include 5 minutes of drawing time, extra reading time, take off our shoes day and 5 minutes of extra recess.  We will see which activity gets the most votes!

Here is our week of learning at a glance:

Reading Workshop-This week we will begin looking at character traits using books from Kevin Henkes.  We will learn that character traits describe a character on the inside ( shy, outgoing, nervous, sad) and not their physical description.   We will use what we learned and respond using our Reading Response Notebook.

Writing Workshop-   We will continue to focus on Writer's workshop expectations and we will begin writing our first story.  Last week we focused on our reader's response so this took up some of our writing time.

Science/ Social Studies-   This week we will use our iPads to tour a science lab and we will begin working on physical properties of an object.   Please have your child bring in a small object from home! This object could be  a special shell, rock,  coin, or trophy. Have fun with it!  We will describe our object using physical properties.

In social studies, we will continue to  focus on good citizenship at home and in the classroom.

Math-   We will begin to look at numbers on a hundreds chart and a number line.  We spent all last week working on 4 ways to write a number.  If you have a few minutes this weekend, ask your child to show you how to write numbers ( up to 99) in these four ways.

Standard form:  45
Expanded form: 40+5=45
Word form:  forty-five
Base 10 blocks:  IIII . . . . .

Important News:   Thanks for having your child wear purple or green on Friday!  We had 72% in spirit colors so we are keeping our fingers crossed we won the spirit stick!  If you have an extra set of earbuds around your house, please send them in with your child for our iPads. I will keep them in  ziplock bag with your child's name on it so they will not get worn by anyone else. I have bought some extra ones just in case as well.  We have a few programs that read books to us or that have videos we can watch so the earbuds will come in handy.

Class Celebrations:    Evin lost a tooth this week and we were able to add him name to our tooth graph!  It was nice to see many of you on Grandparent's Day. That day is always special to the kids.

I hope you have a great weekend!

HI!

I hope you are enjoying your three day weekend! It was really nice to have an extra day to spend with family!  But, that means we are going to hit the ground running tomorrow :) I just wanted to let you know that we used our iPads on Friday!  We used an app called Number Pieces ( which had base 10 blocks) and we worked with a partner to build two digit numbers.  I am super excited we have this learning tool to enhance our learning.  My plan is to incorporate the iPads all across our curriculum!  I will continue to keep you posted on how we use them on a weekly basis.

Here is our week of learning at a glance:
Reading Workshop-This week we will continue to work on establishing our routines during reading workshop.  We are really focusing on finding one spot to read, and only one spot :), and making sure we are reading the whole time!  This is crucial once I start working with small reading groups.  I really try hard to let them find a comfortable spot to read but if I find they are not reading and using their time wisely, I do make them read at their desk so I can monitor their reading time.
Writing Workshop-   We will continue to focus on Writer's workshop expectations and we will begin writing our first story.  We created our topic lists last week so I am anxious to get them writing!
Science/ Social Studies-   This week we will continue to focus on science safety.  We will set up our science notebooks  and even look at science tools.  We will use our iPads to tour an actual science lab and then write about what we saw on our "tour".
In social studies, we will continue to  focus on good citizenship at home and in the classroom.
Math-   We will continue our  unit on place value.  We will focus on numbers to 100 and building numbers using tens and ones. This week we will also incorporate 100's chart activities.
Important News:   I have included a link from our PTA: https://www.pt-avenue.com/parents.asp?schcode=FCE    If you are not a member, this is a link you can become a member for $8.00.  It will also direct you to the online store where you can where you can order Spirit Wear for Fridays.  Speaking of Fridays,  please have your child wear a school shirt or purple/ green.  We are trying to win the Spirit Stick and the class with the highest percentage wins!  Mondays are college shirt days.  Have your child wear their favorite college shirt.

Class Celebrations:    Lila lost a tooth this week and we were able to add her name to our tooth graph!  Chloe  celebrates her birthday this week. We want to wish her a happy birthday!
I hope you have a great day and we will see you  bright and early tomorrow!

WOW!

What a great first week we had!  I am so impressed with our class and how well they are adapting to our classroom rules and expectations. These first few weeks I really spend time going over our expectations as we transition from one subject to another.  Your child's responsibilities will definitely increase this year so setting a good foundation is extremely important.  Today I was amazed how well they came in and completed their "morning jobs".  Ask your child what they are responsible for when they first enter the classroom in the morning.  I know this will be a fantastic year if the first week was so amazing!

I wanted to remind you that our Parent Night is THIS Tuesday,August 30 at 6:00. Please plan to attend and meet me in our classroom at 6:00.   I will go over important information about our class and expectations.  You can also take a look at some of the work your child has completed.    If you are interested, please let me know.

Here is our week of learning at a glance:

Reading Workshop-This week we will focus on choosing good books to read.  We will also go over our reading workshop expectations.  We will focus on finding a spot to read quickly and quietly.    We will also focus on building stamina (reading for longer periods of time) as readers and using our reading time to help us grow as readers.

Writing Workshop-   We will begin our writer's workshop by selecting one small moment to write about this week.  We will focus on what good writer's do as they begin writing a new piece. We will also focus on workshop expectations.

Science/ Social Studies-   This week we will focus on science safety.  We will set up our science notebooks  and even look at science tools.

In social studies, we will focus on good citizenship at home and in the classroom.

Math-   We will begin our  unit on place value.  We will focus on numbers to 100 and building numbers using tens and ones.

Class Celebrations:    Evin lost a tooth this week and we were able to add his name to our tooth graph! Many students have earned enough DoJo points to cash in for a reward!  Don't be surrised if you see a decrease in points.  I put a smiley face on their monthly calendar to let you know they cashed in points.  Some of our friends are saving up their points for a bigger reward!  So far, I am loving the way they are able to monitor their own behavior.  We earned nine  compliments  this week! We need only one more to earn another reward!

I hope you have a  fabulous weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

WOW!

I can't believe this is our final e-mail discussing our week of learning!  I am still amazed how fast this year has flown by!  It seems we were just reviewing basic addition and subtraction skills AND NOW your child is carrying and regrouping THREE digit numbers!  I also think about their reading and how many did not have any chapter books in their reading book boxes at the beginning of the year.   NOW, as a class, we read 470 chapter books since January!  AMAZING!

Thank you for letting me teach your child this year.    I am so glad I was a part of their learning. Thank you for supporting me at school.  I could not have done all of this without your help!

Reading Workshop-  We will continue our Reader's Theater.  We are working on reading our lines with fluency and we will begin creating our props!

Writing Workshop-  We will work on our second grade memory books. We will also write letters to first grade "preparing" them for next year!

Math-    We will get in summer mode by going into the ice cream selling business! We will have a budget to create our ice cream truck.  We will determine the price of each item we will sell, how much money we will make,  and we will create a slogan for our truck!

Science- We will wrap up our units on plants.

Class Brighteners-Congratulations to Elisa AND Sophie!  They are our  Stars  of the Week! Happy Birthday to Tyler H.!  We hope your day is special!  We earned 5 compliments so we are going to celebrate with Stuffed Animal Day!   Please have your child bring in a stuffed animal on  Wednesday next week!  It needs to fit in their backpacks please!

Mark Your Calendar- Our class party will be on Thursday at 1:30!  Hopefully we will present our plays on this day!  I will time how long it takes for all four groups to perform so the plays may need to begin a little earlier than 1:30. I will keep you posted.

Their excitement was definitely contagious!   We will get our final book count tomorrow so please ask your child how many books they have read. Our goal was 15 but MANY students have read over 25 books!!!

Have a  great week!

Friday, May 6, 2016

HI!
I hope you had a great week!  Our class  has been busy learning new concepts daily!  This week we really focused on three digit subtraction with regrouping. This is a hard concept for second graders BUT you can help at home!  Give your child a few subtraction problems, such as 345-187, or 523-356.  Have them practice solving using the algorithm or base 10 blocks.

Reading Workshop-  We will continue our unit on fairy tales.  We will focus on legends and myths.

Writing Workshop-  We will work on writing personal narratives. We will really focus on conventions and spelling as we try to transition to "third grade" writers.

HI!

What a great week of learning we have had!  We have started our animal research and are working on our projects.  If you have any shoe boxes, we need at least 7 of them!  Please send them in with your child!   Some of our friends are creating a diorama and will need a shoe box. Ask your child which project they are creating for their animal research.

Thanks to Ms. Withers for taking on the challenge of our class carnival basket If you sign up on Sign Up Genius, please  put your family name, item donating, and value in the comments so everyone can see what others are donating so there isn't duplication.  IE: Withers, Gap gift card, $20

Reading Workshop-  We will continue our animal research.  Many students are beginning their project this week.  Ask your child if they are creating a newspaper, slide show, diorama, or a poster.   We will share our projects with our families so be on the lookout for an e-mail!

Writing Workshop-  Next week we will use our writing to help us with our animal research. We will learn how to "take notes" and write facts using our own words. We will also use the laptops to help us type our information.

HI!

What a great day we had today! The weather for our field trip was perfect. It was a little cool but I think that helped the animals stay active. The bobcats were running around and the tigers were up and moving as well.  Some of our groups were able to see the bears eating their vegetables and that was a treat! Thanks to all the parents who were able to come!  If you took any group pictures, please send them to my school address so I can have a copy. THANKS!

Reading Workshop-  We will begin our animal research. The zoo field trip was our "kick off" so we will begin our research this week.

Writing Workshop-  Next week we will use our writing to help us with our animal research. We will learn how to "take notes" and write facts using our own words.

Math-   We will continue to work on three digit addition with regrouping!  This concept is tough for second graders so please help your child at home.  You can give them problems such as 123+498= and have them solve.  You can also give them story problems. " The Longhorns ran for 132 yards.  The Aggies ran for 187 yards.  How many yards did they run in all?"

Science- We will continue our unit on animals! We will focus on mammals, fish, and birds next week.

Have a great weekend!

I can't believe February has come and gone!  As the spring weather is approaching, it is a great time for you to reinforce our classroom rules and expectations. We have so much we still need to cover academically  so we still need to stay focused even though we would rather be outside playing :)

If you haven't marked your calendar for March 4th at 8:30, please do so!  That is the day of our second grade Hoedown and it is always a great show!  It is fun to dress your child in western clothing as well.
HI!  I hope you had a great week!  This week flew by but we were able to get a lot of material covered.  In science this week, we had a science demonstration using thermometers.  Ask your child what happened to the thermometer when they added 15 small ice cubes to their water! You can also ask them to tell you everything they know about reading a thermometer.

Reading Workshop-  We will continue our unit on poetry.  We will work on shape poems and continue our lessons on nouns and verbs.

Writing Workshop-  In honor of our Hoedown, we will begin writing our western tale this week.   We will read several western themed books and then create our own story.
Math-   We will continue  our unit on geometry.  This week  we will focus on describing 3-D shapes.  Your child should be able to discuss how many faces, vertices, or edges  on a  given shape.

Science- We will wrap up our unit on the water cycle.

Social Studies-  Towards the end of the week, we will begin our unit on Past, Present, and Future.  Please have your child bring in a baby picture in a zip lock bag. Your child's name should be written on the back.  Make sure you tell them NOT to show their friends.   We are  going to try to guess each other's baby picture and then discuss we have changed.   Due to an illness in my family, we have not gotten to this lesson so I plan on doing this lesson on Friday.  Please send in your child's baby picture this week!

Class Brighteners- Congratulations to Juliana!  She is our Star of the Week!  Happy Birthday to Tyler B.  We hope your day is special~
