HI!

We had a great week of learning!  Today we graphed how many books we have read for the 15 Book Challenge.  Your child is keeping a personal record of the books they have read and we are keeping a class total as well. For the month of January, we have read 83 books as a class!  We were super excited to see our class total.  Ask your child how many books they have read.  Many of them took home books to read over the weekend.  Since the weather is supposed to be beautiful, have them sit outside and read a few pages! ☺

Reading Workshop-  We will continue our unit on poetry. This week we will focus on repetition and syllables in poems.

Writing Workshop-  We will begin writing poems this week. We finished our persuasive letters and many of you need to check your mail because you will have something special delivered!

Math-   We began our unit on money.  We will focus on values up to $1.00 using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.  To help your child at home, you could pull out change and have them count the coins you have.  This is a quick and easy way to get your child comfortable with counting coins.

Science-
 We will begin our unit on rocks.  I have asked your child to bring in one or two rocks for a lesson on Monday.  They should be rocks they have found outside.

Class Celebrations- Carlos  is our Star of the Week! Great job, Carlos!   We want to wish Dalton  a Happy Birthday!  We hope your day is special!

I hope you have a great weekend!

HI!

What a great short week we had!  We finished our Biography Buddies this week.  Ask your child who they researched and have them tell you at least two facts they learned. You could also ask them what "symbol" they drew to represent their famous person. If you want to see your child's hard work for yourself, they are hanging in our hallway!

Reading Workshop-  We will begin our unit on poetry. This week we will focus on rhyme and rhythm in poems.

Writing Workshop-  We will continue writing our persuasive letters.  We hope to have these ready to be mailed by the end of this week!

Math-   We will wrap up our unit on multiplication and division.  We will take our test on Tuesday and then we will begin our unit on money. To help your child prepare for the test, you could review arrays and division story problems.

To review multiplication, you could draw an array and have your child write the multiplication sentence to match.  For example:

* * * * * *
* * * * * *
* * * * * *

Your child should be able to write the multiplication sentence to match the array:  6 X 3 = 18. They should also be able to write the repeated addition sentence to match, 3+3+3+3+3+3=18.  You could also make up story problem. I have 3 shopping bags. Each shopping bag has 5 apples. How many apples do I have in all?

To review division, you could draw 16 stars.  Ask your child, " If you have 4 pieces of paper, how many stars could you put on each paper." Another example could be, " You have 21 skittles and 3 friends.  How many skittles would each friend get if you divided them equally."
.

Class Celebrations- Vincent is our Star of the Week!  Way to go, Vinny!  We want to congratulate Caitlin and Harper for their hard work in the UIL Creative Writing Tournament!  We are so proud of both of you!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Wow!

First of all, I wanted to say how proud I am about all the reading and math that the class did over the holiday! Thanks so much for working with your child.  We were able to jump right into our learning this week with a few reminders about our rules and expectations.

Reading Workshop-  This week we will begin to read biographies. We will research  one famous person and then we will  create a project to represent the information we learned.

Writing Workshop-  We will publish our fiction story about our snow globe adventure and then we will begin writing persuasive letters!  I will give you more information as we begin to finalize our letter writing.

Math-   We will continue our unit on multiplication.  This week we will focus on arrays and story problems involving multiplication.

Class Celebrations- Sophie and Tyler H. lost a tooth over the winter break!  They were super excited to add their names to our tooth graph!  Dalton is our Star of the Week! Congratulations Dalton!

We are going to have a huge challenge in our classroom!  I mentioned it to the class as they were walking out the door today but I am not giving details! ☺ To help build the suspense and excitement, make sure you bring this up during your conversations this weekend.  You might want to casually say, " I wonder what this challenge Mrs. King is talking about could possibly be?"

Thanks for your help and support!  Have a great weekend!
