I can't believe February has come and gone!  As the spring weather is approaching, it is a great time for you to reinforce our classroom rules and expectations. We have so much we still need to cover academically  so we still need to stay focused even though we would rather be outside playing :)

If you haven't marked your calendar for March 4th at 8:30, please do so!  That is the day of our second grade Hoedown and it is always a great show!  It is fun to dress your child in western clothing as well.
HI!  I hope you had a great week!  This week flew by but we were able to get a lot of material covered.  In science this week, we had a science demonstration using thermometers.  Ask your child what happened to the thermometer when they added 15 small ice cubes to their water! You can also ask them to tell you everything they know about reading a thermometer.

Reading Workshop-  We will continue our unit on poetry.  We will work on shape poems and continue our lessons on nouns and verbs.

Writing Workshop-  In honor of our Hoedown, we will begin writing our western tale this week.   We will read several western themed books and then create our own story.
Math-   We will continue  our unit on geometry.  This week  we will focus on describing 3-D shapes.  Your child should be able to discuss how many faces, vertices, or edges  on a  given shape.

Science- We will wrap up our unit on the water cycle.

Social Studies-  Towards the end of the week, we will begin our unit on Past, Present, and Future.  Please have your child bring in a baby picture in a zip lock bag. Your child's name should be written on the back.  Make sure you tell them NOT to show their friends.   We are  going to try to guess each other's baby picture and then discuss we have changed.   Due to an illness in my family, we have not gotten to this lesson so I plan on doing this lesson on Friday.  Please send in your child's baby picture this week!

Class Brighteners- Congratulations to Juliana!  She is our Star of the Week!  Happy Birthday to Tyler B.  We hope your day is special~

Have a great weekend!

What a busy week we have had!  This week we had two programs we were able to watch.  We were able to watch a Mad Science program and the students enjoyed watching the science demonstrations. Today we had 4th and 5th graders from Murchison Elementary in Pflugerville show us their fantastic jump roping skills!  WE are still reading, reading, reading!  I am so proud of our class and how they are challenging themselves to read good, on their level, chapter books!  Ask your child how many books they have read this week!

Reading Workshop-  We will continue our unit on poetry. This week we will focus on alliteration and counting syllables.  This is going to lead us into reading haiku poems.  We will also look at acrostic poems this week.

Writing Workshop-  We will begin writing poems this week. We have spent the week looking at objects with "poet's eyes" and "scientists eyes" .  We went out to our garden and one of our friends described the daffodils as " hands that reach out to grab me".  Another student described the portable as having " windows as clear as crystals!"   Wow!  I am excited to see how they use these descriptions to write their poems.
Math-   We will continue  our unit on money.  This week we will  use our money skills to help us add and subtract in a problem solving situation.

Science-
Today we began our unit on natural resources.  We will continue natural resources and end the week learning about seasons and weather.

Class Celebrations- Chris is our Star of the Week! Great job, Chris!   Juliana lost a tooth this week!  She is the first one to lose a tooth in February!

Don't forget that spring pictures are Tuesday, February 9!
