Wow!  What a busy, short week!   I was excited to hear all the wonderful things they had to share about their holiday.   It was a great way to start off the New Year!

I sent home their new homework today.  It will need to be turned in Friday, January 19.   In third grade, homework is included in their overall grade average.  This is a great time to start teaching about responsibility.

Here is our week of learning at a glance:

Reading Workshop- We will focus on biographies.  This week we will focus on finding specific information in biographies such as special achievements/ important versus interesting facts, and reading timelines to understand a person's life.

Writing Workshop-  We wrote letters to our pen pals and they were super excited!  Ask your child about their pen pal!  This week in writing we will focus on writing and publishing a personal narrative.

Math-   We will focus on area this week.  We will learn that area is measured in square units and we can find the area of  squares and rectangles.

Science- This week we will continue to focus on identifying and comparing  natural and man made resources.  We will also discuss seasons towards the end of the week.

Class Brigheners-  We would like to say Congratulations to Bradley! He is our Star of the Week!  We also want to say Congratulations to Sophie, Zaiden, and AJ!  They all lost a tooth over the holiday! We wanted to wish Ella  a  Happy Birthday!  We hope your day was special!

I hope you have a great three day weekend!

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a great holiday!  It was a nice break but now I am rested and  excited to start our third nine weeks!  Where has this year gone?  I cannot wait to see your child and catch up on what they have been doing these last two weeks!

Reading Workshop- We will review nonfiction text features.  We will focus on how text features help us understand nonfiction texts.  This review will prepare us for our biography unit starting next week.

Writing Workshop-  We will work on letter writing this week so we can respond to our pen pals from Teravista.  Next week we will focus on personal narratives.

Math-   We will review 2-D shapes by reviewing vocabulary.  We will also work on  composing and  decomposing  2-D shapes.

Science- This week we will focus on identifying and comparing  natural and man made resources.  We will also discuss seasons towards the end of the week.

Class Brigheners-  We would like to welcome Zackary to our class!  He joined us right before the holiday and we are glad he is a part of our class!
