What an amazing day we had today!  Thanks to all of you who were able to make it to our Bridge Presentations!  I think our class did a fabulous job!  I was so proud of all of them for having the courage to speak in front of so many grown-ups!  It was amazing to see the whole process unfold and we could not have celebrated without your help and support!  THANK YOU!

Reading Workshop-  With the Early Release and our Bridge project, we will begin our unit on Nonfiction this week.  We will discuss nonfiction text features and how they help us understand the text.  We will also begin reading nonfiction texts during our reading time.

Writing Workshop- We are in the process of publishing our Monster Writing. Many of us are editing and working on our final, published draft.

Science/ Social Studies-  We will focus on objects in the sky this week.  We will look at the moon, sun, and stars.
Math-   We will continue our unit on time.  If your child has an analog clock or watch, this is a great time to have them practice telling time.  Time is a hard concept since we live in a digital world but it is a life skill they will need to master.  I would have your child wear a watch and at random times, ask them the time.

Class Celebrations:   Robert lost a tooth this week and we were able to add his name to our tooth graph!  Mae'Laisha  is our Star of the Week!  Way to go Mae'Laisha!

Have a great weekend!  Stay safe and we will see you on Monday!

I hope you had a great week!  We have been super busy measuring objects in our room using inches, centimeters, feet and yards!  We are also ready to start building our bridges!  We worked with our group to sketch and label our design and we will start building on Monday! Ask your child about their group's design.  You can ask them about the materials they are using and what they are using to support their structure.

Speaking of materials, we are in need of craft sticks and cardboard boxes.  We will need a piece of cardboard to build our bridges on.  This will make it easier for us to transport.   We are inviting you to view our bridges on Friday, October 30 at 7: 45.  You can also come on Friday from 10:30-11:15.

Reading Workshop- We will focus on using visualization to help us make a picture in our head based on what we read.  Towards the end of the week, we will begin our unit on nonfiction books!

Writing Workshop-  We are going begin writing  a new story using descriptive words!  We will even get to "create" our main character using construction paper!

Science/ Social Studies-  This week we will wrap up our Project Based Learning.  I am excited to see what our "builders" create!

Math-   We will continue our unit on measurement. We will work on measuring with meters next week.  We will also begin our unit on time.

Class Celebrations:   Christopher lost a tooth and we were able to add his name to our tooth graph!  Elisa  is our Star of the Week!  Way to go Elisa!

Don't forget we have school pictures next Thursday.  We are also celebrating Red Ribbon Week.  Here are the activities for next week:
Monday 26th: “Put a Cap on Drugs” Wear your favorite hat.
Tuesday, 27th: “Texans Give Drugs the Boot” Yeehaw!  Put on those boots, bandanas and anything Texas today!

HI!

What a great week of learning!  Today we had a guest speaker. A civil engineer came to talk to us about building bridges and roadways.  Our class had some fantastic questions and we will use what we learned when we build our structures next week.  We formed our "building" groups and they came up with a group or company name.   Ask your child what is the name of their company and why they chose that name.

Reading Workshop- We will focus on using inferences to help us understand the text.  This  causes us to read beyond the text to figure out what the author is trying to tell us.  Later in the week, we will focus on visualization or using the author's words to help us "paint" a picture of what is happening in the story.

Writing Workshop-  We are going to look at punctuation and making sure our story has a beginning, middle, and end.

Science/ Social Studies-  This week we will continue our Project Based Learning .  We will construct our towers and bridges next week!  If you want to send in supplies, we will definitely put them to good use!  :)

Math-   We will continue our unit on measurement. Next week we will focus on inches, centimeters, feet, yards, and meters!  We will have a great time measuring objects in our room AND we will even measure things outside!

Class Celebrations:    Tyler H. lost a tooth this week and we were able to add his  name to our tooth graph! Elisa  will  celebrate her  birthday this week!  We hope she has a very Happy Birthday!  Harper  is our Star of the Week!  Congratulations Harper!

Have a super weekend!

Wow!

What a fun week of learning we had!  This week we completed two science experiments that the students LOVED!  Ask your child  what they predicted would happen to the gummy bear when it was placed in water, salt water, vinegar, and baking soda water.  Then ask them what happened to each bear after it sat in the solution overnight.  We also used Magic Capsules to observe how matter can change.    Ask your child what they observed happening to the capsule as it was placed in warm water.

Reading Workshop-  This week will focus on questioning.  Good readers ask questions while reading the text .  We will also get to read with a partner next week so we can practice asking good questions.

Writing Workshop-  We will begin our personal narratives.  We will write about one small moment in our lives, such as riding the Tornado slide at Great Wolf Lodge.  Our whole story will center around that one small moment. This is a great time to include details in our writing.

Science/ Social Studies-  This week we will continue to  focus on properties of matter. We will look at how the properties of matter can change when we add heat.  We have some great explorations using crayons, chocolate, and popcorn!

Math-   We will continue to work on two digit addition.  We should be able to solve two digit addition problems using the algorithm, adding tens and ones, using a hundreds chart or a number line.  Any of  those strategies are appropriate for second grade.

Class Celebrations:    Congratulations to Allison!  She is our Star of the Week!  We cannot wait to share her poster on Monday!  We also earned 10 compliments!   We will vote for our reward on Monday!

I just wanted to remind you that we are going to take the OLSAT on Wednesday and Thursday next week.  Your child can not "study" for this test. Just make sure your child comes to school with a good breakfast and plenty of rest.

Have a super weekend!
